
The ring-necked parakeet, some 40 years after it first bred in the wild in London, joined the list of birds that can be legally shot without special permission. There's a good article about it in The Guardian.

They've been there for as long as I can remember, and I went to primary school in Chiswick in the 60's. Their numbers have increased incredibly in the area and can be heard all along the river, in Kew Gardens and around Turnham Green. Although rather impressive birds, they do appear quite intimidating to other species, and are extremely noisy.
